Facebook loses billions over data breach scandal

It’s been an awful week for Facebook, to say the least. The social media network owned by Mark Zuckerberg lost a whopping R548 billion – this week alone-  after investors lost trust in the company due to a Cambridge Analytica data scandal.

    Facebook user data breach

    The Cambridge Analytica Scandal

The Cambridge Analytica is accused of using Facebook user data improperly on behalf of political clients.

Aleksandr Kogan a psychology academic at Cambridge University collected data of 50 million Facebook users using an app he created on the social network. Kogan then forwarded the data to a UK-based political firm, Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by U.S President Donald Trump for his 2016 campaign in a bid to sway public opinion of himself.

    Facebook to Take Action

Mark Zuckerberg, who’s the founder of the social media network, said in a statement, the move was a “breach of trust”, and that he was “really sorry” in an interview with CNN. Zuckerberg vowed to take action against “rogue apps”. He added that “if it’s the right thing to do” he’s “happy” to testify before Congress.

However, Kogan said both Facebook and the firm were using him as a scapegoat. He told the BBC: “The events of the past week have been a total shell shock. My view is that I’m being basically used as a scapegoat by both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica when… we thought we were doing something that was really normal.

We were assured by Cambridge Analytica that everything was perfectly legal and within the terms of service.”

Zuckerberg said in a statement he posted on Facebook, that he would make it far harder for apps to “harvest” user information. He says: “we have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you,” said Zuckerberg.

Kevin Feige, the President for Marvel Studios confirmed this in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last week. “We absolutely will do that,” said Feige. Whom however, didn’t reveal any plot secrets.

    Black Panther Behind the Scenes

Feige said the filmmakers did discuss a sequel when making the first movie. “One of the favourite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a part one and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a part two,” said Feige.

“There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first ‘Black Panther.’ We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one,” he added.

    It’s Possible: Xbox, PS4 Cross-Play

A cross-play between Microsoft’s Xbox One and PS4 is possible – but only if Sony allows it! Xbox PS4 cross platform

    Cross-Play Anticipations

Both Xbox One and PS4 players have been cudgelling their brains after the two announcements, wondering if a cross-play would happen between the console platforms. The good news is that both Epic Games and Microsoft are open to the idea. However, it’s all up to Sony to allow it to happen.

On Saturday, a fan enthused to Xbox boss Phil Spencer on Twitter saying that they would like to have Xbox One players and PS4 battling each other on Fortnite. Spencer responded “Me 2” and the official Twitter account for Fornite followed with a “We 3”.

But, unfortunately Sony hasn’t given a nod for the cross-play until today. In the long run, Rocket League players also pleaded for this.

    Sony, please say yes!

Epic Game’s Battle Royale mode will be available for players to play on both Android and iOS mobile devices. Gamers will also be able to challenge other players on other platforms.

    Apple Opens Medical Clinics

Apple Inc. is preparing to open a group of medical clinics – well, for its employees. The AC Wellness Network will offer primary healthcare to not only Apple staff but also their dependants. The news surfaced earlier this week. Read on.

    Apple

    Apple’s Health Centre Initiative

Well maybe an ‘apple a day’ doesn’t really keep the doctor away. Technology giant, Apple, announced that it would be launching health clinics called “AC Wellness” for its employees in spring 2018 (March – June in Northern Hemisphere). This will be part of employee perks.

According to a website which Apple created for the initiative, the clinics will offer “a unique concierge-like healthcare experience for employees and their dependents.” In the current, the company promotes its watch which does more than tracking your fitness. It is much more of a health-monitoring device.

“AC Wellness is an independent medical practice exclusively dedicated to delivering Passionate, Compassionate, and Effective Healthcare to Apple employees and their families … in multiple stunning, state of the art Wellness Centers,” the post reads.

Patient files won’t be hacked either.

“We believe in Trusting, Accessible Relationships with our patients, enabled by beautiful and seamless technological experiences. We foster an environment of continuous learning and teamwork,” the company added.

    Career Opportunities

Although outsiders won’t receive the health care services from Apple, like they do with other Apple products, there is more good news to this initiative.

AC Wellness is hiring! The subsidiary is looking to hire medical practitioners; doctors, nurses, health coaches and “designers”. The company is also looking for a primary care physician who will assist in “preventing future disease” and “preventive care” with readiness to implement such methods using new technology. Career opportunities are galore and advertised on acwellness.com.

Where Will Apple Base its Clinics?

The two AC Wellness clinics will be based in California in the United Sates. That is, the same location where Apple headquarters are located. One clinic will sit directly at the Apple office park.

Usain Bolt Will Not Be Joining Mamelodi Sundowns

Former Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt will not be joining Mamelodi Sundowns aka Masandawana. Bolt finally made his highly anticipated announcement today after hinting that he had joined a soccer team. Sundowns was touted as a possible soccer team after Bolt was pictured training at the club’s field in January. Read on.

    Usain Bolt not joining Sundowns

    Usain Bolt’s Soccer Journey Begins

On Sunday, 25 February 2018, Usain Bolt took to Twitter to announce that he would be joining a soccer team. He says in the video caption: “I’ve signed for a football team! Find out which one this Tuesday at 8 am GMT.”

Since then, the world was counting down to the eight-time Olympic champion’s big announcement. Especially South Africans when Mamelodi Sundowns tweeted a picture of Bolt at Chloorkop and captioned it “Football will never be the same”. But, unfortunately, the 31-year-old will not be joining Mamelodi Sundowns as we had all hoped.

    Masandawana Tweet

Bolt has signed up to feature at the Soccer Aid charity match for UNICEF in June at Manchester United’s Old Trafford. Along the sprinter will be football legends and A-list stars including the likes of Robbie Williams.

“Excited to announce that I will be playing in @socceraid for @UNICEF_uk   2018 at Old Trafford on Sunday 10th June. Make sure you’re ready @robbiewilliams,” said Bolt in a tweet.

    Usain Bolt

    The UNICEF Charity Game

The UNICEF charity match does not consist of a professional soccer club, and Bolt will not be playing on a full-time basis. The deal is just to have the 100m world-record holder to appear at the match. The soccer game is set to take place on 10 June 2018.

    Bolt’s SA visit

During his visit to South Africa a few weeks ago, Usain Bolt enjoyed a trial with the Pretoria-based side and PSL leaders. The Jamaican track legend was linked up with the club for a Puma clothing campaign. Puma sponsors both the team and Bolt.

Violent Video Games Equals Gun Violence, Trump

In the wake of a horrifying school mass shooting in Florida last week, US President Donald Trump said violent video games and movies were affecting the youth. Trump was speaking at a gun safety meeting on Thursday at the White House. Read on.

    Trump

    The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Shooting

At least 17 people were killed and 14 injured as gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last week Wednesday. The 19-year-old Cruz was seen wearing a gas mask as he stalked into the premises with a rifle, smoke grenades and ammunition cartridges and started raining bullets.  The horrifying mass shooting broke shortly before school was dismissed.

    Marjory Stoneman Douglas Shooting

    Trump’s Theory

Following this and other past events, President Donald Trump had a lot to say about school shootings in the US. On Thursday, he hosted a gun safety meeting with lawmakers at the White House.

    Violent Video Games

At the meeting, Trump partly blamed violent video games and movies for violence. “We have to do something about maybe what they’re seeing and how they’re seeing it, and also, video games,” said Trump. “I’m hearing more and more people say the level of violence in video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts.”

Cruz is reported to have, for 15 hours a day, played video games.

Meanwhile, one study found that children who had just finished playing video games that were violent would fill in the blank letter in explo_e with the letter ‘d’ for ‘explode’ and not with an ‘r’ which would then read ‘explore’.

    Violent video games

    Movies

Trump also cited violent movies in his argument. He says: “And then you go the further step, and that’s the movies. You see these movies, and they’re so violent a kid is able to see the movie if sex isn’t involved, but killing is involved, and maybe we need to put a rating system for that.

The fact is that you are having movies come out, that are so violent, with the killing and everything else, that maybe that’s another thing we need to discuss,” he added.

    Sniper

Trump also suggested having school teachers armed with guns.

To date, there have been three major school mass shootings; the Columbine High School massacre which happened in 1999 leaving 15 (including both perpetrators) dead. The 2007 Virginia Tech shooting which left 33 (including the perpetrator) dead; and the recent Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting which claimed the lives of 14 students and three staff members.

What are your thoughts of Trump’s argument?

    WeChat Issues Illegal Gambling Warning

WeChat, a Chinese multi-purpose social media application software, has launched a warning over illegal gambling on its network. On the statement, published Thursday, the company said it had plans to strictly implement its “zero-tolerance” policy with regards to betting activities. Read on.

    WeChat

    No Gambling Allowed on WeChat

Lunar New Year celebrations start this week, and WeChat has warned its users that it would not tolerate illegal gambling on its platform. The company said it had strengthened its technical aptitudes to detect behaviour which relates to gambling on its App. Content reported or flagged as illicit by users or detected by the advanced program will be deleted.

“WeChat will maintain its high-level crackdown [on gambling]” the company said in the statement.

The company further said the information of offenders would be forwarded to the police for a penalty.

2 300 Illegal Gambling Groups Uncovered

WeChat said over the past two years it had uncovered over 2 300 chat groups on its network that were engaged in online gambling. The users, which were about 30 thousand, had their WeChat accounts disabled and some restricted. Also, during that period, the police had 28 investigations for illegal betting, and 100 WeChat users were arrested.

In September 2017, digital sentries in China ruled that group chat administrators are the ones responsible for the content posted on the group chats.

Law Enforcement Agencies to Help Curb WeChat Crime

The authorities in Macau together with law enforcement agencies have joined forces to help curb the use of the platform for illegal betting.

Just last month, the police broke up the latest of the so-called virtual ‘red envelope’ betting operations. A woman identified as Zhu was reported by ThePaper to have made more than a million rand by opening new groups on WeChat every day in a bid to stay ahead from authorities.

On Friday, the secretary for security in Macau, Wong Sio Chak said the police would: “enhance their collaboration with mainland police departments to work on the prevention and investigation of such crimes.

Tsogo Sun Builds Own Water Supply in Cape Town

Tsogo Sun Holdings, one of South Africa’s biggest entertainment and leisure groups, has revealed that it is urgently building its own water supply for its Cape Town hotels. The city’s major water crisis influences the move. The private desalination plant is expected to operate early next month at the latest.

    Cape Town drought

    Cape Town Runs Dry

Fifteen years ago, experts alerted that the Mother City was experiencing a serious water challenge. They have raised their concerns repeatedly in the media that unless action was taken, water would run dry at around this time.

Now due to the repeated fail in winter rains, dam levels in Cape Town have seriously dropped, and the city is in the grip of a catastrophic three-year-long drought.

Day Zero – No Water Supply for 75% Households

Authorities in the Western Cape have threatened to cut out 75% of normal water supply on the so-called Day Zero. That is the 11 May 2018.  More than one million homes in residential suburbs will no longer have running tap water.

    Tsogo Sun’s Plan

The situation has led Tsogo Sun to come up with a private solution for water supply. This is building their own alternative water source set to be in operation by early March 2018. Guests visiting any of Tsogo Sun hotels in Cape Town won’t have a problem with purified water to drink, showering, bathing, flushing toilets etc.

On Wednesday, Ravi Nadasen, the COO of Tsogo Sun announced to the media in Johannesburg.

“There is a plan in place that all of the alternative water sources will come on board before Day Zero comes,” said Nadasen. “The current situation in Cape Town is going to become the new normal. We’ve got to be responsible as well.”

    CT Tourism

Cape Town is regarded one of Africa’s biggest tourist destinations. According to the South African Department of Tourism, the city sees about 1.6 million tourists per year, spending about R40 billion.

Sisa Tshona, CEO of SA Tourism said: “South Africa cannot afford to lose confidence as a tourist destination.”

In the current, residents in Cape Town have been advised to use water sparingly. Each person is allocated 50 litres a day. Bath plugs have also been removed at the city’s hotels.

ICE Totally Gaming 2018 Receives Criticism

The long-awaited 2018 ICE Totally Gaming event has received great criticism over “swimsuit sexism” from the gambling regulator in the United Kingdom. Gambling companies that were exhibiting their products at the event used ‘scantily clad hostesses’ to entertain delegates despite the regulator’s plea.

ICE Totally Gaming 2018: The Event

The exhibition stalls at the 2018 ICE Totally Gaming conference featured dancers gyrating around a pole in leather lingerie meanwhile alcoholic beverages were being served to attendees. Some of the young women, which were more than 250, were dressed up as Bavarian maids, cheerleaders and burlesque dancers while men wore smart suits.

    ICE

Stalls with Scantily Clad Promo Girls

Microgaming, one of the world’s leading gaming providers, was among the stallholders who featured the above mentioned scenes. But, it is no surprise since the gaming company was showcasing its brand-new Playboy-themed online slot, Playboy™ Gold. The online gambling game which is set for official release on 7 March 2018 is everything ‘playboy’ just as the glamour magazine. The slot will be joining the original Playboy Online Slot which the company launched five years back.

    ICE Totally Gaming Event

Endorphina, another gambling company, had a popular stand where dancers were seen entertaining mostly male delegates and taking pictures with them. The screens which they performed in front of featured words that were somewhat “sensual” and “provocative”.

    Sexism Backlash

The show received a serious backlash, including a warning from the UK gambling regulator, earlier this week.  Sarah Harrison, the Gambling Commission’s chief executive, threatened to boycott the event. Harrison believes the operators for the event need to think of something more creative and ‘less sexist’.

Speaking to BBC’s Radio 4’s Today, Harrison says: The men were wearing smart suits and women were being asked to wear not much more than swimsuits. That’s totally unacceptable; it’s not reflective of the modern economy.

“This isn’t about political correctness. It’s about good regulation and good governance because businesses that have a more diverse workforce are more likely to make better decisions. And that’s critical from a regulator’s point of view.”

    ICE gaming event

A retailer who was at another stall selling uniform for casino hostesses referred to the outfits as “a bit too much information” and said the comperes sometimes showed a lot [of meat].

    No Problem for Hostesses

Although the gaming event received a lot of criticism, the entertainers themselves had no problem. Some of the hostesses said the work gave them a confidence boost while others were content with the daily pay rate they received. One added that “it’s our bodies, if we’re going to make money out of it better to do that than not work at all.”

    Totally Gaming

However, some were annoyed that they experienced unwanted physical contact from the male delegates. “There are guys who try and touch you when you’re getting your picture taken with them,” one said. “You’ve just got to deal with it and say, ‘Get off me.”

    Microgaming

The annual gaming event was held at the Excel centre in London from 6 to 8 February 2018.  Gambling companies including casinos, sports betting, bingo and technology providers were in attendance.

Basirath Rajaram wins Sibaya's Golden Ticket Promo

Latest Winner on Sibaya Casino’s Golden Ticket Promo

Basirath Rajaram is the latest millionaire at Sibaya Casino’s Golden Ticket promotion. After spending thousands of rands playing at the South African casino for a couple of years, the 57-year-old could not believe it when her ticket was drawn from a box of 250 hopeful entrants last Friday.

She tells IOL: “I was walking out of the room where the draw was being held when my name was called after Aunty Rumba (Durban comedienne Jailoshini Naidoo) drew my ticket. I just stood there, shocked, while my husband told me, ‘go go, you won’,” said Rajaram. That night “I couldn’t eat or sleep. I just sat on the bed the whole night, smiling. It was a happy kind of shock” she added.

Rajaram won the Golden Ticket in August this year and was automatically entered into the lucky draw. “I never thought I would see seven numbers in my account. Before we won, my husband joked that he’d phone our daughter and say we won the jackpot. Now it’s true. I thank God,” she enthused.

Great feedback for Golden Ticket Promotion

The gaming manager at the casino, Robbin Kennedy, said the promotion has once again proven to be one of the most exciting competitions in the province this year. He says: “We congratulate our Golden Ticket winner and latest millionaire, Basirath Rajaram. Certainly, nothing pleases us more than to see our guests winning big especially at this time of year.

We would also like to thank all of our wonderful guests who participated in the promotion and made it so successful,” he said.

Rajaram is the latest to win the competition after Deresh Ranjith won a convertible Jaguar F-type in June this year.

Suncoast Casino gets revamp worth R1.6 billion

    0

South African gaming and leisure group, Tsogo Sun, has forked out a substantial R1.6 billion to upgrade one of its properties sitting in Durban, Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World. The expansion and renovations for the casino took six months to September 2017.  Read on for more.

    Suncoast Casino Renovations

Included on Suncoast Casino’s R1.6 billion revamp was brand new furniture and fittings for the resort’s new 504-room SunSquare and StayEasy. Major hotel refurbishments and overall casino maintenance, including the casino floor and system replacement, came at a total cost of R438 million.

Jacques Booysen, the new CEO for the group said the investment made at Suncoast hotel and casino, all with other property acquisitions, would do the company good in terms of bringing significant returns in the future.

A PLOT TO KILL AT LAS VEGAS CASINO

United States – A man from Ohio has been arrested by federal authorities in the U.S after threatening to kill his wife and stage a ‘historic’ mass shooting at a Las Vegas casino, and church along the strip. The Cuyahoga Falls man, Wei Li, sent a series of text messages threatening his estranged wife based in Las Vegas. Li is facing charges of interstate threatening communications and destruction of evidence.

LI’s LAS VEGAS CASINO AND CHURCH MASS SHOOTING PLOT

On Thursday, U.S authorities publicly announced the arrest of Li, who planned to commit a mass shooting which he said would “go down in [Las Vegas] history”. The 28-year-old targeted a Las Vegas casino where his wife worked at the time of the texts, and a church she attended with at least 1000 attendees.

Li said in a string of texts, dating 6 November: “There are 1,000 people in our church. I will make the biggest in history”. Prior to the text messages, Li visited the casino and later on bragged to his wife on how freely he roamed around the casino and hotel with no security or police officer stopping him. “No one checked me,” he said.

According to court records, the wife responded to some of the texts in the profanity-laden conversation saying: “You are too cruel” and “Are you sick?”. But, that did not stop Li from sending threats. He allegedly then sent her pictures of himself holding a riffle and knives, saying “you made me do this”, and said she would be to blame for the mass shooting fatalities.

MASS SHOOTING PLANS A REAL THREAT OR A JOKE?

On November 10, detectives at the Cuyahoga Falls Police and FBI agents took Li in for a joint interview. According to their report, Li was asked to unlock his phone, of which he complied, but then allegedly quickly deleted a thread of messages. When questioned, Li said the text messages about the mass shooting were “bad” and he also claimed he was just playing around.

Court records say investigators found two knives at Li’s home, sitting next to the mobile phone he used to send messages. No riffles were found. Li said he did not own any guns after the riffle he had in 2014 was stolen.

If found guilty, Li faces more than 20 years in prison on charges of transmitting interstate threatening communications.

LAS VEGAS CASINOS ON HIGH ALERT

Las Vegas casino remain high on alert after last month’s mass shooting at the Mandalay Bay by gunman Stephen Paddock. The incident claimed the lives of 58 people and hundreds were injured. Since then, casinos on the strip have tightened their security and adjusted their ‘do not disturb’ policies.

Moreover, the criminal complaint on Li’s case does not make any reference of the casino or the name of the church the suspect planned to attack.

    0

It has been a month since casino giant, Caesars Entertainment, exited nearly three-years of chapter 11 bankruptcy. Now the gaming corporation is aiming for big heights. The group says they are buying a new property in Indiana, and that is casino and gaming operator; Centaur Holdings.

Caesars Entertainment to buy Centaur Holdings

Caesars’ plan to acquire Centaur Holdings

On Thursday, Caesars Entertainment announced that it is buying Centaur Holdings for a whopping $1.7 billion in cash. If approved, the purchase will see the company acquiring Centaur gaming properties which include; Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville, and Hoosier Park Racing & Casino located in Anderson.

Caesars CEO Mark Frissora commented saying: “It’s important to note that, like Caesars Entertainment properties around the country, Centaur locations are leading employers and community partners which will continue going forward”. Frissora, who’s also the company’s president, added that they believe that the two companies will be a great combination.

The chairman and CEO of Centaur says: “Centaur Gaming has been committed to bringing the entertainment and economic benefits of gaming and horse racing to key communities throughout Indiana since 1993. We believe Caesars’ acquisition of Centaur Gaming will further build on the success and contributions of the properties for the benefit of our customers, team members, horsemen, community partners, and financial stakeholders”.

The gaming operations which are soon to be owned by Caesars offer slot machines, electronic table games and live horse racing. The conclusion for the acquisition is set for the first half of 2018.

    Caesars operations

Caesars Entertainment is one of the oldest gaming, hospitality and leisure groups. It has been in operation for more than 77 years since its foundation in Reno, Nevada. The group currently operates 47 casinos in 13 U.S states and five other countries. Caesars Entertainment owns well-known South African casino and resort; Emerald South Africa which is based in Vanderbijlpark.

    More news

Caesars Entertainment already operates two casinos in Indiana; the Horseshoe Southern Indiana Hotel and Casino, and the Horseshoe Hammond Casino. Although the law in Indiana does not allow one company to operate two casino properties in the region, the rule does not affect Caesars and Centaur’s deal since the casinos on sale are race-track-based.

    SA SOARS IN GAMBLING REVENUES

    0

On Wednesday, the global auditing firm, PwC released its sixth edition of the gambling outlook for South Africa: 2017-2021. According to the report, South Africa’s gross gambling revenues (GGR) might grow from last year’s R27 billion to R35bn in 2021. A 5.4% compound annual increase is projected in gambling taxes and levies.

Gambling revenue projected to reach R35bn in 2021 | SA Casino News

    Major contributors in gambling revenues

The GGR for casinos, betting, limited payout machines, and bingo saw a 3.9% increase in 2016 compared to the previous year. Casinos are said to be major contributors to gambling taxes and levies in SA.

    Casinos

In 2016, the gambling revenues from casinos amounted to R2 billion, with Gauteng holding the first spot at R1 billion, accounting to 37% overall. Kwazulu-Natal and the Western Cape Province followed with R624 million and R591 million, respectively. The two provinces had the highest shares of taxes and levies as GGR percentage. On the fourth spot was Eastern Cape with R171 million, followed by the North West at R115 million. The remaining provinces were below R100 million.

    Betting

Betting followed as the second-largest gambling category, contributing R430 million in GGR. It comprises of pari-mutuel betting on horse racing fixed-odds, bookmaking on sports events, and taking bets on the outcome of lotteries.

Sports betting grew three times from R847 million in 2012 to R2.9 billion, overtaking horse racing in 2015 and 2016. The report further mentions that online bookmarkers and illegal online gambling businesses contributed to the growth in sports betting. “Just as growth in smartphone and mobile broadband penetration has fuelled growth in illegal online gambling, it also contributes to growth in legal online sports betting. More than 50% of South Africans now subscribe to a mobile broadband service,” reads the report. Sports betting accounts for 57% in total betting.

    Bingo

Bingo, which consists of traditional bingo and electronic bingo terminals, was reported the fastest-growing category marking an overall increase of 36.6 % in GGR. The Gauteng province accounted for 64% of total bingo GGR in 2016.

    National Lottery

According to the report, lottery ticket sales saw a decline between 2012 and 2016. The possible reason for the drop being illegal lottery operations – which most are now closed, according to a report from the National Lotteries Commission.

Nevertheless, the recent PwC report highlights that the gross lottery tickets rose in 2016, increasing the GGR by 34.7% to R2.98 billion.

More on the gambling outlook report

The gambling outlook report further gave credit to sporting events in the country, citing that they further boost betting volumes. It mentioned major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, the Rugby World Cup and the European Championship. The PwC says it forecasts double-digit increases in 2018 and 2020.
