Online School Applications Gauteng

GDE’s Online School Applications Portal

The online school applications portal for Gauteng pupils is now live, as already mentioned. This time around, the department promises that the process will run even smoother – after the online portal encountered problems back in 2016.

“We have enhanced the system.” said the spokesperson for GDE, Steve Mabona. “[Now] we’ll be able to have 30 hits per second which means parents won’t have technical glitches.”

This year, the department has brought the Home Affairs Department on board in a bid to strengthen the system and technology.

“It’s a very important learning tool for us, it doesn’t discriminate and because it’s linked to the Home Affairs system it knows identity numbers,” said MEC Panyaza Lesufi after assisting a parent to apply.

“Everyone who doesn’t know how to use it [the portal] can visit any community library and that library is going to have admission personnel who will assist them on how to enrol. So, if you can’t afford data, you can go there,” Lesufi added.

Although the department promised to re-open the system if numbers allow, parents are urged to apply for their children as soon as possible to secure space.

Over 50 000 Online Applications Processed in One Hour

Applications are flooding in already. Within the first hour of opening, the department received 52 105 applications online. In the first minute 10 000 successful applications were completed. But, in order to complete the application process, parents need to submit all relevant documents to the schools they have applied for within seven days of submitting the online application.

Below are the documents which need to be supplied:

  • The learner’s identity document
  • Parent/Guardian’s ID
  • Proof of residence/ work address
  • An inoculation card for Grade 1 applicants
  • Grade 7 report for Grade 8 applicants

The department said Grade R learners also need to apply for Grade 1 admissions.  Parents can only apply up to five schools for one learner.

Applications can be submitted at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za.
